Portion Distortion

Health Tip of the Day!

Portion distortion can be a tricky thing. We live in a society that super sizes everything. We have become visual eaters and think that if our plate is not full, we need more food. If you are watching what you eat, it's important to understand portion control. Even a food that is considered a healthy choice will become unhealthy when eating to excess. When a lot of people first start trying to eat healthier, their number on complaint is that they don't feel full, or that they are hungry.
It's important to remember these things:
You have been overeating for many years. Your stomach's internal 'thermostat' has become used to the big meals you have put in it. Over time, your thermostat will reset, and you will begin to feel full much faster.
You must stay hydrated so that our brain can distinguish between hungry and thirsty. You may be reaching for a snack, when what your body really wants is a drink.
Protein will keep you fuller, longer.
Sugary foods will make you feel hungry and crave more food.
You should try to maintain a schedule with eating, so your body can become accustomed to knowing that fuel will be available at all times.
Here is a handy visual reference for portions.

Try being mindful of your portions for a few days. You may be surprised to find that the amount you thought was "normal" is actually over sized.
